No two things go together more than Xavier and basketball—not ketchup and mustard, not Batman and Robin, not even a ventriloquist and a dummy. And while your school now has more than 15 conference championships, that wasn’t always the case.
Flash back to Saturday, February 28, 1981—long before play in the Cintas Center, before the Cincinnati Gardens—and your Musketeers took the hardwood at the Schmidt Fieldhouse against Evansville. Behind the smooth shooting of three-time team MVP Anthony Hicks, Xavier edged Evansville 59-57 to score their first Midwestern City Conference championship and first basketball conference championship altogether. Pay homage to the season that started Xavier’s dominant run and get ready for the tallies to continue. Old Xavier for aye!
