On May 3rd 1890, the Ohio State Buckeyes played the university’s first-ever football game, meeting the Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan in Delaware, Ohio. A running-heavy attack carried the Alexander S. Lilley-coached Buckeyes to a 20-14 victory. The OSU newspaper, The Fortnightly Lantern (now The Lantern), reported that “Neither team had practiced much, but our boys knew a little more about the game than the Delaware team. This fact gave us quite an advantage, and to it can be attributed the victory.” Since then, Ohio State has faced Ohio Wesleyan a total of 29 times—more than any other Ohio school—with the Buckeyes winning 26 and tying one.
