Not just the center of all Broadway chatter these days, Founding Father Alexander Hamilton is the man we have to thank for the Coast Guard, our nation’s preeminent and oldest continuously active maritime institution.
Founded on August 4, 1790 at the behest of that “Revenue Marine,” the United States Coast Guard has had a hand in everything from collecting tariffs, ensuring the waters are safe for travel, maintaining the legitimacy and security of our ports, to even seeing that lighthouses are in tip-top shape. The agency’s catch-all nature has demanded a diversity in expertise while prioritizing agility, something only those with sea legs can really understand. Pay homage.
