The legacy of Woody Hayes has all the trappings of Greek mythology. From not being the university’s first choice to becoming the blazoned symbol of college football success, the incomparable competitor simply did not understand or accept losing—just ask Archie Griffin or any of the 56 All-Americans he coached.
After his first three seasons of posting underwhelming records, and feeling his job was on the line—and it was—Hayes delivered a 10-0 record to secure the national title in 1954, the first of his five national titles. The season jumpstarted a tenure that would end with a mind-melting 205-61-10 record, 13 Big Ten Championships and four Rose Bowls. Pay homage.
