In just his third season coaching the N. C. State men’s basketball team, Jim Valvano led the Wolfpack to arguably the most magical run in college basketball history.
Due to a rough 4-6 January record during an otherwise solid season, the N.C. State Wolfpack were set to miss out on direct entry to the NCAA Tournament—unless they ran the table at the ACC Tournament. And so began the historic “Survive and Advance” journey. After avoiding a loss to Wake Forest by a single point and needing overtime to take out North Carolina, Jimmy V led his Wolfpack to the ACC Final and a showdown against Virginia, a team that had beat N.C. State in both regular season meetings. But no team beats the Wolfpack three times in a row, and with the win, N.C. State headed to the Big Dance. Five heart-stopping tournament wins later—two by a single point, including a second win over Virginia—unbelievably, Valvano and his Wolfpack found themselves in the NCAA Tournament final against one-seeded Houston, who were riding a 26-game winning streak. The rest is college basketball lore: 44 seconds left, all square at 52, the airball by Whittenburg, but Charles there to finish it for dunk right before the buzzer. Pay homage to the legend at the helm with this instant-classic raglan.
