Few Major League Soccer storylines compare to the underdog-to-top-dog turnaround that the Columbus Crew SC pulled off between the 2007 and 2008 seasons, a run complete with ultimate league glory.
After a 2007 season that saw Columbus’ pitch maestros miss the playoffs, head coach Sigi Schmid initiated a sea change with the help of Argentine all-star forward Guillermo Barros Schelotto. The Men of Black and Gold tore through the 2008 regular season, losing just a single game in their last 11 to snag the team’s second Supporters’ Shield. The momentum continued through the playoffs, as the Crew SC swept aside the Kansas City Wizards and Chicago Fire to reach the MLS Cup. Set on raising the hardware for the first time, the Crew SC dominated the New York Red Bulls 3-1 and lifted the MLS Cup! Glory to Columbus!
