The nut of the official tree of Ohio—doesn’t sound like the first thought for a collegiate mascot, and for Ohio State it wasn’t.
That was the vetoed buck deer. But students Ray Bourhis and Sally Huber came back to OSU’s athletic council and suggested the buckeye. Within months, a paper-mâché Brutus debuted at Ohio State’s 1965 Homecoming Game and won over the stadium. While the paper-mâché original form quickly became fiberglass, the much beloved Brutus forever stayed. Pay homage to the original Brutus with this super-soft throwback. Go Bucks!
