March 23, 1997. The Rosemont Horizon. Fan favorite Bret Hart faced the brash, aggressive villain Stone Cold Steve Austin in a Submission Match that was supposed to be the culmination of their white-hot feud dating back to Survivor Series '96.
The match itself was a five-star classic and saw Stone Cold passing out from blood loss. Austin’s resiliency would leave a lasting impact on the fans, who now saw him as the fan favorite. After the match, Hart continued to attack Stone Cold, and became the villain. This double turn would dramatically alter the landscape of professional wrestling: within a year, Bret Hart would be gone from the WWE and Steve Austin would ascend to become the face of the Attitude Era.
