In the late 1970s, Surf Ohio founder Ron Kaplan’s entrepreneurial spirit drew him to Indianapolis, where the Speedway’s permanent seating capacity of 257,000 balloons to approximately 400,000 for Memorial Day and the “500”. The thought of that many people spurred Kaplan to create his trademark slogan for the sports spectacle: “To hell with racecars—I came to party!”
