    The Story
    For a young man born in Alabama in 1913, his family’s migration north to Cleveland in 1919 proved the one chance that Jesse Owens needed, as he set world records while in high school, finishing the 100-yard dash in 9.4 seconds and long-jumping nearly 25 feet.

    At the 1936 Berlin Olympics, Owens won four gold medals—the 100-meter sprint, the long jump, the 200-meter sprint, and the 4 x 100-meter relay. When asked about his success, Owens replied, "one chance is all you need."
