    The Story
Three Rivers Stadium stood for 40 years at the spot in Pittsburgh’s Northside where the Allegheny meets the Monongahela and the two form the Ohio River. The $55 million stadium, designed by Deeter Ritchy Sipple, Michael Baker, & Osborn Engineering, opened its doors on July 16, 1970 as the Pirates managed just five hits in a 3-2 loss to the Reds. “The House that Clemente Built” hosted the first postseason baseball game on an artificial surface in the 1970 NLCS and the first World Series game played at night in 1971. Three Rivers also saw seven AFC Championship games from 1972 to 1998, and was the site of Franco Harris’ “Immaculate Reception” in a 1972 Steelers playoff victory over the Raiders.
