The 1976 Pittsburgh Steelers defense allowed, on average, fewer than ten points per game. Considering that the ‘76 Baltimore Colts offense averaged nearly 30, this is no small feat. The Steel Curtain, led by Hall of Famers “Mean” Joe Greene, Jack Ham and Jack Lambert, held five teams scoreless that season, and allowed no touchdowns in eight of the last nine games, before bowing to the eventual Super Bowl champion Raiders 24-7. Eight of the 11 defensive players were selected for that season’s Pro Bowl and anchored a D that helped the Steelers win four championships in six years.
