Born Raymond Michael Mancino in 1961, "Boom Boom" Mancini inherited his distinctive nickname from his father (a top-ranked boxer during the 1940s), who laid the foundations for his son’s career. The name perfectly suited the younger Mancini's wild, "whirlwind," intense fighting style, and "The Pride of Youngstown" ascended to the WBA title in 1982. He successfully defended his title twice before retiring in 1992 with a record of 29-5 with 23 knockouts. His legacy also included an inspirational story involving a young champion who had won the title as much for his family as for himself.
