On January 25, 1988, longtime college basketball broadcaster Bill Raftery was calling a Big East matchup between Providence and Pitt. On a fast break three and a half minutes into the game, Pitt guard Sean Miller fed forward Jerome Lane on the right wing and Lane threw down a monstrous dunk that shattered the backboard at Fitzgerald Field House. Raftery shouted “Send it in, Jerome!” to a Monday night ESPN audience, the game was delayed 30 minutes, and the night now lives in Pitt lore as “The Night the House Came Down.”
