Don't Knock The Rock

Perhaps no athlete was more beloved in Cleveland in the 1950s and ‘60s than Bronx native Rocco “Rocky” Colavito, who, in two brief stints with the Indians became the first member of the Tribe to notch two 40-home run seasons. In 1959, Colavito hit four home runs in consecutive at-bats in a single game, and in ’65 he led the league with 108 RBI, finishing among the American League’s top five in home runs, hits, and runs (as well as playing the entire season without an error in the outfield).

In ’94, Cleveland Plain Dealer writer Terry Pluto published The Curse of Rocky Colavito, a book that explained the Indians’ long run of mediocrity since trading Rocky to Detroit before the 1960 season. When the Tribe won its first pennant in 41 years in 1995, Pluto wrote a sequel, Burying the Curse; however, the Indians have not won another pennant since ’97, and have not won the World Series since 1948.
