In 1992, the Beastie Boys, fresh off the release of
Check Your Head, founded Grand Royal, a record label interested in signing musicians that had been skipped over by other record companies. With its cards-and-dice logo, the label suggested a gamble, but fans could be assured that every Grand Royal record was a quality record--they were "guaranteed every time."
In interviews, the Beasties stated that they would listen to each and every unsolicited demo tape sent to Grand Royal. In '92, Luscious Jackson’s
In Search of Manny EP was the label’s first release. Though the company was forced to close in 2001, Grand Royal will always be remembered by fans as something truly special.
In honor of the Beastie Boys being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, NYC-based
Mick Boogie will release a mixtape entitled "Grand Royal" on Friday, April 20.
