The 1962 World’s Fair, in the thick of the Cold War and the Space Race, served to show that the United States wasn’t lagging behind the Soviet Union in technological superiority. The fair's vision of the future displayed a technology-based optimism and its centerpiece was the 605-foot tall, 10,000-ton Space Needle, the tallest structure west of the Mississippi. Finished in less than a year, the Space Needle was completed in April 1962, at a cost of $4.5 million. It dominates the Seattle skyline and still serves as the city’s defining landmark.
