In 1966, Ohio governor James A. Rhodes convinced former Cleveland Browns owner and coach Paul Brown that the state needed a second football team; Cincinnati was the logical choice, thereby splitting the state. Brown named the new team the Bengals and chose the exact same shade of orange as the Browns, adding black as the secondary color.

Upon the completion of the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, the Browns were moved to the AFL-based American Football Conference and placed in the AFC Central, the same division as the Bengals, and an instant rivalry was born.
