Michael “Hinky Dink” Kenna, one of the two aldermen elected in Chicago's First Ward at the turn of the 20th century, made Chicago history when he uttered the memorable phrase, “Chicago ain’t no sissy town,” and, if anyone could vouch for the city’s reputation, this was the man. A dropout at the age of ten, the 5’1” Kenna first sold newspapers before being elected alderman. Notorious for his corruption, Kenna ran a saloon where he exchanged meals for votes in his district, which was the haven of pimps, prostitutes, gamblers and gangsters.
