The sixth-oldest Catholic university in the nation, Xavier was founded in 1831 as a men’s college in downtown Cincinnati, adjacent to Francis Xavier Church on Sycamore Street. For 72 years, young men from St. Xavier College (now Xavier University) battled every Saturday on the gridiron, cheered on by the school’s mascot, D’Artagnan the Musketeer. In 1973, Xavier's Board of Trustees ended the football program, following a determination that it lost thousands of dollars per year. This led to the popular saying among students: "Xavier Football: Undefeated since 1973."
