Wake Forest University’s athletic teams were originally known as “The Fighting Baptists” due to its association with the Baptist Convention. However, after a particularly impressive 1923 win over the Duke Blue Devils, a newspaper reporter wrote that the Wake Forest players “fought like Demons,” giving rise to the school’s current nickname, “The Demon Deacons.”
