Virginia Tech’s sports teams were originally known as the “Fighting Gobblers,” and when the name changed to the “Hokies” (from a late 19th century spirit yell), the turkey-like appearance of the mascot stuck. According to VT legend, a Hokie is a word like “hooray,” used to express approval or excitement.
