Towards the end of the 19th century, football players at the College of New Jersey sported wide orange and black stripes on their jerseys and stockings (even though the university’s teams had neither nickname or mascot). Sportswriters of the day began referring to the players as “tigers” and the name was used as a popular rallying cry. By custom rather than proclamation, the tiger became the school’s official nickname and mascot when it was renamed Princeton University in 1896.
