After being delayed nearly a week due to rain, the 1986 Indianapolis 500 saw Ohio native Bobby Rahal running behind Kevin Cogan with a dozen laps to go. On lap 194, Arie Luyendyk spun exiting turn four, and with the yellow flag out, the cars backed up behind the pace car. With 2 ½ laps remaining, Rahal got the jump on Cogan and pulled to a one-second lead down the backstretch, winning his first 500 by 1.4 seconds (and with only two gallons of fuel remaining in his tank). Rahal’s final lap was an all-time record 209 miles per hour, the fastest race lap-to-date in Indy 500 competition; he also became the first driver in Indy history to complete the 500 miles in fewer than three hours.
