The Philadelphia Sphas were a team that competed in both the Eastern Basketball League and American Basketball League. The Sphas were organized in 1917 as an amateur team by legendary coach Eddie Gottlieb, Harry Passon and Hughie Black shortly after their high school graduation. The team first played their home games in social halls and, later, in the ballroom of the Broadwood Hotel. After World War II, they played some games in the Philadelphia Arena.

The name "Spha" was originally an acronym, derived from South Philadelphia Hebrew Association, the organization that purchased the players' uniforms. The team featured many eastern U.S. top college graduates, including Harry Litwack, Cy Kaselman, Davey Banks, Moe Goldman, Shikey Gotthofer, Mendy Snyder, Irv Torgoff, Red Wolfe, Max Posnack, Gil Fitch and Jerry Fleishman. All but a few Sphas players were Jewish during the club's many years of amateur and professional existence.

The Sphas, who came to be known as the "Hebrews", eventually morphed into the NBA's first champion, the 1946-47 Philadelphia Warriors. Always a team of considerable prowess, the Sphas were the most dominant team in the ABL, capturing 7 league championships in 13 seasons.

In the small hours, a friend and I were wandering around the French quarter, when suddenly I heard a trumpet in the distance. I couldn't see anything but an excursion boat gliding through the mist back to port. Then the tune became more distinct. The boat was still far off. But in the bow I could see someone standing in the wind, holding a trumpet high and sending out the most brilliant notes I had ever heard. It was jazz. It was what I had been hoping to hear all through the night. I don't even know whether it was 'Tiger Rag' or 'Panama'. But it was Louis Armstrong descending from the sky like a god. the ship hugged the bank as if it were driven there by the powerful trumpet beats. I stayed absolutely still, just listening, until the boat dropped anchor."

“I have never seen so many sincere faces in my life as I did today,” the Series’ Most Valuable Player, third baseman Mike Schmidt, told a wildly enthusiastic crowd at the stadium, estimated by police at 80,000. “Take this world championship and savor it.”

HOMAGE and Zippo® have teamed up to commemorate the early days of an icon.

Zippo was founded in Bradford, Pennsylvania in 1932 when George G. Blaisdell decided to create a lighter that would look good and be easy to use. Fascinated by another recent invention, the zipper, Blaisdell called his new lighter "Zippo", and backed it with a lifetime guarantee.

The 1941 heritage model closely replicates the design of the original both inside and out.

Cooper Stadium, originally known as Red Bird Stadium, is located at 1155 W. Mound St. in Columbus, Ohio. It was built in 1932 as a ballpark for the Columbus Red Birds, the then farm team of the St. Louis Cardinals. The park was constructed using the same blue prints as Red Wing Stadium in Rochester, New York in 1929.

Kenesaw Mountain Landis, baseball's first elected commissioner, proclaimed Red Bird Stadium as "the finest park in all of baseball" during opening day on June 3, 1932.

In 1977, the ballpark was renovated when baseball returned to Columbus after a six year absence, becoming the new home of The Columbus Clippers. Then, in 1984, the stadium was renamed in honor of Harold Cooper, the county commissioner who was responsible for keeping baseball in Columbus in the 1950s.

Though the Clippers no longer call it home, "The Coop" has welcomed many great ball players over the years, including Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, Whitey Ford, Jim Palmer, Johnny Bench, Willie Stargell and Don Mattingly.

The nickname originated during the Reds' first visit to Houston in 1990 when a reporter told Myers that Astros first baseman Glenn Davis was furious after being hit by a pitch three times.

Towards the end of the 19th century, New Yorkers commonly referred to anyone from Brooklyn as a "trolley dodger", due to the vast network of street car lines criss-crossing the borough as people dodged trains to play on the streets. By the early 20th Century, however, sportswriters began referring to the Dodgers as the "Bums", most likely taking inspiration from Jack Dawkins, the pickpocketing "Artful Dodger", a character in Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist.

10¢ Beer Night

Ten Cent Beer Night was a promotion held during a game between the Cleveland Indians and the Texas Rangers at Cleveland Municipal Stadium on June 4, 1974. The idea behind the promotion was to offer as many eight-ounce cups of Stroh's beer as the fans could drink for just 10¢ each, thus increasing ticket sales.

In the ninth inning, a fan attempted to steal Texas outfielder Jeff Burroughs' cap. Confronting the fan, Burroughs tripped, and Texas manager Billy Martin (thinking that Burroughs had been attacked) charged onto the field, his players right behind, some wielding bats. A large number of intoxicated fans – some armed with knives, chains, and portions of stadium seats that they had torn apart – surged onto the field, and others hurled bottles from the stands. Ken Aspromonte, the Indians' manager, ordered his players to grab bats and help the Rangers.

The bases were pulled up and stolen and many rioters threw a vast array of objects including cups, rocks, bottles, batteries from radios, hot dogs, popcorn containers, and folding chairs. As a result, umpire crew chief Nestor Chylak, realizing that order would not be restored in a timely fashion, forfeited the game to Texas. He later called the fans "uncontrollable beasts" and stated that he'd never seen anything like what had happened, "except in a zoo".

A riot squad from the Cleveland Police Department finally arrived to restore order.

The 25,134 fans in attendance (the past season's average attendance had been 8,000) chugged down an estimated 60,000 cups of beer.

In the early 1970s, Major League Baseball players seldom, if ever, wore facial hair. The practice had been widespread in the 19th century, but by the early 20th century it was rare for a player to sport a mustache or beard. As detailed in the book Mustache Gang, Oakland Athletics owner Charlie Finley decided to hold a mustache-growing contest within his team. When the A's faced the Cincinnati Reds, whose team rules forbade facial hair, in the 1972 World Series, the media dubbed the series as "the hairs vs. the squares". Thanks in part to the on-field success of the A's in the early 1970s, along with changing fashions, facial hair has again become very common among baseball players.
rookie up against the finest fore-checkers ever to grace the rink.

You've got confidence, and with stick in hand you're looking to bring home the cup, win MVP, make the covers of major sports magazines, and date a beautiful
New York model (not necessarily in that order).

But you'll soon learn that in this league nothing's ever given to you, and
before you can reach your goals - you gotta score 'em! You've gotta possess
both the artful skill of a finesse player and the bone crushing brutality of
an enforcer. You've gotta defend the goal against unrelenting power plays.
And, finally, defend yourself when anger flares, gloves come off, and fists
start flying.

So strap on Blades of Steel, and prepare to make a name for yourself. Or be
put on ice by the hottest hit men in hockey!
