In the late 1950s, the University of Nevada Las Vegas adopted as its mascot a wolf wearing a scarlet-and-gray Confederate uniform. The nickname “Rebels” was given to UNLV’s athletic teams because the school, emerging from the shadow of the University of Nevada, Reno, in effect “rebelled” against its bigger and older brother to the north. Though the mascot has evolved into a modern-day mountain man, the university continues to proudly display its scarlet and gray.

After routing Duke by 30 points to win the 1990 NCAA Championship, the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels entered the 1990-91 season ranked #1 in nearly every poll. The Rebels went 27-0 during the regular season and rolled through regional play in the NCAA tournament before a rematch with Duke in the Final Four. The Blue Devils’ 79-77 loss ended UNLV’s season with a record of 34-1, but the Rebels sent five players to the NBA and has been billed as one of the greatest college basketball teams of all time.

Towards the end of the 19th century, football players at the College of New Jersey sported wide orange and black stripes on their jerseys and stockings (even though the university’s teams had neither nickname or mascot). Sportswriters of the day began referring to the players as “tigers” and the name was used as a popular rallying cry. By custom rather than proclamation, the tiger became the school’s official nickname and mascot when it was renamed Princeton University in 1896.

The 1980-81 Indiana won five NCAA tournament games by an average margin of 23 points, but the Hoosiers were far from invincible. In fact, the team lost nine games before finishing the year on a ten-game winning streak. During a two-week stretch Indiana lost to Kentucky, Notre Dame and North Carolina, and during a trip to Hawaii dropped games to Clemson and Pan American. En route from Hawaii, Knight ran into North Carolina's Dean Smith in an airport and they both lamented how poorly their teams were playing. Neither legendary coach would have suspected that the Hoosiers and Tar Heels would play for the national championship three months later.

The North Shore. Oahu. “Pipeline.” According to experts, it’s the world’s most photographed and filmed wave by far. Perhaps that’s also because of a well-earned reputation as the world’s premier tube – and most dangerous surf spot. Once called Banzai Beach, a pretty good moniker for the towering sets crashing onto an uber shallow reef of lava caves, in the early Sixties it was boardmaker Mike Diffenderfer who noticed the spot’s waves resembled the giant concrete pipes being used in a nearby road project. Before long, the “Banzai Pipeline” became known as the sport’s ultimate break and, many would claim, the ultimate test of a surfer’s courage, skill and luck.

Surf Ohio salutes “Pipeline” and the legacy of the famous barrel riders who have mastered it with this Longboard Legends Collection limited-edition of 100 hand-crafted 23” surfboards. Each is numbered and signed by Ron Kaplan and arrives ready-to-hang in your tiki bar, beach house, office, or wherever you hang ten.

Ten Cent Beer Night was a promotion held during a game between the Cleveland Indians and the Texas Rangers at Cleveland Municipal Stadium on June 4, 1974. The idea behind the promotion was to offer as many eight-ounce cups of Stroh's beer as the fans could drink for just 10¢ each, thus increasing ticket sales.

In the ninth inning, a fan attempted to steal Texas outfielder Jeff Burroughs' cap. Confronting the fan, Burroughs tripped, and Texas manager Billy Martin (thinking that Burroughs had been attacked) charged onto the field, his players right behind, some wielding bats. A large number of intoxicated fans - some armed with knives, chains, and portions of stadium seats that they had torn apart - surged onto the field, and others hurled bottles from the stands. Ken Aspromonte, the Indians' manager, ordered his players to grab bats and help the Rangers.

The bases were pulled up and stolen and many rioters threw a vast array of objects including cups, rocks, bottles, batteries from radios, hot dogs, popcorn containers, and folding chairs. As a result, umpire crew chief Nestor Chylak, realizing that order would not be restored in a timely fashion, forfeited the game to Texas. He later called the fans "uncontrollable beasts" and stated that he'd never seen anything like what had happened, "except in a zoo".

A riot squad from the Cleveland Police Department finally arrived to restore order.

The 25,134 fans in attendance (the past season's average attendance had been 8,000) chugged down an estimated 60,000 cups of beer.

In 1965, when Army coach Bobby Knight first recruited a skinny point guard from Chicago with a mouthful of a last name, it’s hard to fathom that nearly 50 years later Michael William Krzyzewski would eventually surpass his mentor as the winningest coach in the history of Division I men’s basketball. Since arriving at Duke in 1980, Coach K’s Blue Devils have won 13 ACC Championships, been to 11 Final Fours, and won four NCAA National Championships. As Krzyzeski overtook Knight on November 15th, 2011, he thanked "the basketball gods" for arranging Knight (as well as a number of former Blue Devils) to be present for his achievement. "Boy, you've done pretty good for a kid who couldn't shoot," Knight teased his protege.

In 1966, Ohio governor James A. Rhodes convinced former Cleveland Browns owner and coach Paul Brown that the state needed a second football team; Cincinnati was the logical choice, thereby splitting the state. Brown named the new team the Bengals and chose the exact same shade of orange as the Browns, adding black as the secondary color.

Upon the completion of the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, the Browns were moved to the AFL-based American Football Conference and placed in the AFC Central, the same division as the Bengals, and an instant rivalry was born.
The WTT was the first professional sports league to give equal weight to each man and woman competing for their respective teams, as a match consisted of the first player or team to win five games. The first incarnation of World Team Tennis was short lived in Cleveland, as Nets owner Nick Zingale moved the team to New Orleans in ’78 for the league’s final season.

With six seconds to play and Boston College down 45-41 to the University of Miami, BC quarterback Doug Flutie called “55 Flood Tip,” in which all his wide receivers ran straight routes to the end zone. Flutie took the snap and scrambled right, heaving a Hail Mary pass from his own 37-yard line. Flutie’s pass fell directly into the waiting arms of Eagles receiver Gerard Phelan, who fell to the ground in the end zone for a 47-45 Boston College victory.

Flutie passed for 472 yards and four touchdowns in “The Miami Miracle” and won the Heisman trophy shortly afterward. BC would finish the season with a win over Houston in the Cotton Bowl, but wouldn’t defeat Miami again until 2007.

The 1981 AFC Championship game was played in Cincinnati’s Riverfront Stadium on January 10, 1982 in the coldest weather in NFL history—the air temperature was −9 °F, but 27 mile-per-hour gusts drove the wind chill factor to −37 °F. San Diego running back Hank Bauer recalled, "when I came out of that tunnel… man, (the wind) just hit you like someone threw 100 knives at you."

Although the Bengals crushed the Chargers 40-17 in week 10, anticipation for the game was high as San Diego featured three future Hall of Famers (Dan Fouts, Charlie Joiner and Kellen Winslow) and Cincinnati quarterback Ken Anderson was the top-rated passer in the NFL and won both the MVP and Comeback Player of the Year award. The Bengals won "The Freezer Bowl" 27-7 but went on to lose Super Bowl XVI to the San Francisco 49ers, 26-21.

Days after George Gipp, Notre Dame’s first All-American, led the Irish to a win over Northwestern, he lay in a hospital bed with a throat infection. When Knute Rockne visited Gipp, the halfback turned to his coach and uttered his famous speech:

"I've got to go, Rock. It's all right. I'm not afraid. Some time, Rock, when the team is up against it, when things are wrong and the breaks are beating the boys, ask them to go in there with all they've got and win just one for the Gipper. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock. But I'll know about it, and I'll be happy."

Rockne used the story of Gipp, along with this deathbed line, to rally his team to an underdog victory over an undefeated Army team at Yankee Stadium in 1928.

Bertman Ball Park Mustard is a rich, smooth, old world style brown mustard near and dear to the hearts (and stomachs) of Clevelanders for over three generations of sports and food fans.

Joseph Bertman originally made the mustard in the garage behind his house in the Kinsman neighborhood in Cleveland. He made it primarily for League park, which was one of his best customers. He made it in glass gallon jars which were returned, washed and reused.

Bertman continued to sell it to League Park and naturally carried it over to Municipal stadium when it opened. The concessions in the ballpark remained customers for the entire time Municipal stadium was open.

When Jacobs Field opened, Bertman Mustard was there. Even at Progressive Field, Bertman continues to partner with the Indians!

After the 1984 Detroit Tigers opened their season with a 35-5 start, local sportscaster Al Ackerman dubbed the team "Bless You Boys." When the Tigers clinched the ’84 American League pennant (after leading the AL East wire-to-wire), manager Sparky Anderson wrote the following in his journal: “I’ve waited for this day since they fired me in Cincinnati. I think they made a big mistake when they did that. Now no one will ever question me again.” The ’84 Tigers downed the Padres 4-1 to win the franchise’s fourth World Series, and Anderson’s journal was later published under the title Bless You Boys: Diary of the Detroit Tigers’ 1984 Season.

For nearly three decades in the latter half of the 20th century, Woody Hayes was Ohio State football. After arriving in Columbus in 1951, Hayes’ Buckeye teams amassed an overall record of 205-61-10, winning 13 Big Ten titles and three national championships. “Success,” Hayes said, “it’s what you do with what you got.” With what Hayes had, he proved to be one of the most successful coaches in the history of college football. His grinding “three yards and a cloud of dust” offense wore out opponents, but Hayes’ commitment to his players’ education ensured that they wouldn’t do the same in the classroom. Hayes taught mandatory English and vocabulary classes to his freshmen and was referred to as “Professor Hayes” by students.
The nickname was given approval by "territorial officials" in 1838, twelve years after the book was published and eight years before Iowa became a state. The University of Iowa subsequently adopted the Hawkeye as the mascot for its sports teams in the late 19th century.
Journalism instructor Richard Spencer III drew a caricature of a hawk, and the university adapted it, but left the naming of the bird to fans through a statewide contest. John Franklin, an alumnus, suggested the name “Herky” as a reference to Hercules, and the name stuck.
Under head coach Ralph Underhill, the Raiders’ averaged a double-digit margin of victory through the regionals and handily dispatched the University of the District of Columbia 92-73 in the finals. It was the first and last Division II title for Wright State, as the program made the jump to Division I into 1987 (and qualified for the NCAA tournament in ’93 and ’07).
To explain his choice, Green said that the bear “is good natured and clean. While courageous and ready to fight, it does not look for trouble for its own sake, nor is it bloodthirsty. It is not one of a herd, but acts independently. It is intelligent and capable of being educated. It is a good swimmer and a good digger, like an athlete who makes Phi Beta Kappa. Furthermore its color is brown; and its name is Brown.”

It can be argued that Charles William “Chic” Harley built Ohio State’s football program, both figuratively and literally. Harley led the Buckeyes to Big Ten championships in 1916 and 1917, was a consensus first-team All-American and a charter member of the College Football Hall of Fame. In Harley’s era, the Buckeyes played at Ohio Field, which seated 20,000. Harley so excited the OSU faithful that he inspired a $1.3 million funding drive to build the massive Ohio Stadium in 1920. For this reason, the stadium is often referred to as “The House that Harley Built.”
On September 29, 1895, the name changed for good—under legendary coach Glenn “Pop” Warner, the Cardinals routed Northwestern 36-0, and the Chicago Tribune read that the Wildcats had been “Struck by a Cyclone.” The article went on to say, "Northwestern might as well have tried to play football with an Iowa cyclone as with the team it met yesterday." Since then the Iowa State teams have been known as the Cyclones.
