The sixth-oldest Catholic university in the nation, Xavier was founded in 1831 as a men’s college in downtown Cincinnati, adjacent to Francis Xavier Church on Sycamore Street. For 72 years, young men from St. Xavier College (now Xavier University) battled every Saturday on the gridiron, cheered on by the school’s mascot, D’Artagnan the Musketeer. In 1973, Xavier's Board of Trustees ended the football program, following a determination that it lost thousands of dollars per year. This led to the popular saying among students: "Xavier Football: Undefeated since 1973."

After facing years of relocation rumors, the 1995 Seattle Mariners finished first in the American League West and faced the wild-card Yankees in the ALDS. Facing elimination in the 11th inning of a deciding Game 5, Edgar Martinez laced a double down the left-field line; Joey Cora scored from third as Ken Griffey Jr. raced from first to home, beating Bernie Williams’ throw and sending the Mariners to their first ALCS in franchise history.

Hall of Fame broadcaster Dave Niehaus, who called Mariners games for 33 years, punctuated the moment with an emphatic cry that still reverberates throughout the Pacific Northwest: “the Mariners are going to play for the American League Championship! I don't believe it! It just continues! My oh my!”

After eight fruitless years in Milwaukee, the 1982 Brewers won 95 games and their first (and only) American League pennant, leading the league in both runs and home runs. Because of the team’s abundant offense (Cecil Cooper, Ben Ogilve and Gorman Thomas each hit over 30 home runs and Robin Yount hit 29; all four went for 100+ RBI), they were dubbed “Harvey’s Wallbangers” after manager Harvey Kuenn.

Two men: Bill Parcells and Lawrence Taylor. The New York Giants’ hiring of the defensive coordinator in 1979 and drafting of the linebacker in 1981 changed the fortunes of a franchise. The linebacker corps of Carl Banks, Gary Reasons and Hall of Famers Taylor and Harry Carson helped Parcells’ aggressive Wrecking Crew became one of the most famed—and feared—defenses in NFL history, setting the tone for the Giants defensive dominance through the 1980s and Super Bowl wins during the 1986 and 1990 seasons.

Austrian-born Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger began weight training as a teenager, winning the Junior Mr. Europe contest at age 18, Mr. Universe at 20, and his first Mr. Olympia title at 23. The “Austrian Oak” is undoubtedly among the most important figures in the history of bodybuilding, captured forever on film in the 1977 doc Pumping Iron. After winning the 1980 Mr. Olympia competition (his seventh), the man referred to as “the most perfectly developed man in the history of the world” retired from competition, focusing his energies on careers first in Hollywood and later in politics.

In 1970, former FBI agent Jim Lorimer was asked to chair the Mr. World contest in Columbus, and he invited the top six bodybuilders in the world—including a young Austrian named Arnold Schwarzenegger. The pair began promoting contests and events, and in 1989, Lorimer and Schwarzenegger founded the Arnold Classic (now called the Arnold Sports Festival), which has evolved into one of the largest fitness expos in the world. The Festival welcomes more than 180,000 athletes annually who compete in nearly 50 events, including 12 Olympic sports. Along with the Mr. Olympia competition, the Arnold Festival is considered the most lucrative strongman event in the world.
