Youngstown State University is the only D-I program in the country with the nickname Penguins for its athletic teams. On a blustery January evening in 1933, fans stomping the floor and waving their arms were said to have resembled penguins, and the nickname was unanimously accepted by the student body and introduced in the campus newspaper later that year. Pete and Penny, two penguins in scarves and stocking caps, have represented YSU ever since.
