Both the men’s and women’s teams at the U.S. Naval Academy bear the nickname “Midshipmen” (or “Mids”), which in naval terminology refers to the younger members of the crew in training to become officers. The school’s mascot, Bill the Goat, first appeared in 1893, and his statue appears just inside the main gate to the Academy grounds.
