On December 14th 1914, the student body of Baylor voted for their mascot, and among the nominations were the buffalo, the eagle, the bear, the antelope, and the bookworm. The bear won handily, garnering more than half of the 406 votes cast. In the fall of 1917, the 107th Engineer Corps from Fort MacArthur donated a North American Black Bear to the University, and the first Baylor Bear (named Ted) had arrived.
